Cold temperatures, wet weather, changes in air pressure and decreased activity may leave your muscles and joints feeling stiff and achey during the winter months. Here are some tips to try and help you withstand the season!

If you are feeling tired, depressed and achey since the onset of winter, you may not be getting enough Vitamin D. The body makes Vitamin D from the sun’s ultraviolet rays so the lack of sunshine hours during the winter months may mean you are deficient. Vitamin D has a number of beneficial effects on the body and is particularly crucial for the absorption of calcium into our bones therefore preventing osteoporosis.

Magnesium is an important mineral that is often deficient in our diet. Restless legs or frequent muscle cramps are very common signs indicating magnesium deficiency. Among other things deficiency can also cause weakness, poor heart health, tremors, anxiety and high blood pressure.

If your joints are often stiff and sore, you may also want to try a nutritional supplement that specifically helps your body maintain healthy joint tissue such as Glucosamine and chondroitin.

At Miramar physiotherapy we stock a range of quality practitioner only supplements relating to joint and bone health and can advise you of the type & form best suited to your needs.
